Another Boston announcement: ROBOT OVERLORDS.
This one looks very interesting.
Cast includes Gillian Anderson & Ben Kingsley.
Boston seems to be showing it in advance of its official US release.

Anyone thinking of attending besides David the Z?
I've been to two of the last three. Was not thinking of returning so soon, but I have a lovely new granddaughter there & the film list is looking increasingly interesting - -
Anyway. Is David the lonely Columbus outlier?

ROBOT OVERLORDS is for the Pre-Marathon festival, NOT the marathon.

So, the official slate as it now stands for the MARATHON: 2001 w/Guest Douglas Trumbull! THEM! IRON GIANT, EDGE OF TOMORROW, THIS ISLAND EARTH, RAGNAROK, MOONRAKER & SNOWPIERCER

Pogo, as of right now the Columbus to Boston and Back Again 2015 Crew includes Dave the Z, Joey the N, and Brucie the B. And a few other longtime co-conspirators whose names will be withheld for their own future good. So if yer lookin' for friendly faces as a motivation to attend, you'll have a few.

We might actually have the largest Columbus crew to attend since the legendary SF25 in 2000. Check out the rare, vintage, highly collectible pic of said crew here in the Archives section.

Also announced for the MARATHON,
CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI (1920 Silent)

By pointing out that ROBOT OVERLORDS was part of the Boston Science Fiction FESTIVAL, not the Marathon, LA introduced an important point.
Boston, due to a desire to show independent movies, pieces that they couldn't squeeze into the 24 hour Thon, and just because (I assume) they wanted to expand the fun, added a weeks worth of evening showings building up to their Marathon several years ago. You can buy tickets separately or combined with the Marathon. This year it seems that it will extend from 2/6-2/14
In addition to OVERLORDS Boston has announced:

THE NOAH (1975). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045709/combined

UNCANNY (2105). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2321502/combined

BLESSID (2014). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2404940/combined

DR. WHO & THE DALEKS (1965). Digital copy. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059126/combined
for the Festival.

LA or someone who knows what they are talking about (not me) should describe the dynamic of the
Festival. What info I have was gleaned from http://sf.theboard.net/cgi-bin/yabb2/Ya ... 1420500159

Sounds like sour grapes to me - you gave up too easily. Besides, how exactly are they defining, "independent?" Not run by a theater chain like AMC or Regal? Check - seems to me both qualify. In fact, I'd actually say that an event run by a student club at a university student union auditorium, is MORE independent than one run for profit at an independent theater.

scott,
Boston is independent of any theater chain and has been held at five different theaters.
I don't know the arrangement that they have with the Somerville where it has been located for the last decade, but I would assume that it gets a rental plus concessions. Although there is a core group of persons who run it, similar to Columbus, one guy, Garen Daly, is definitely in charge.
So. It is independent in that it's run by fans, although I get the impression that Garen does most of the work.

As I mentioned above, if this is the definition of independent that the Bostonians are asserting, then their conclusion is wrong. First of all, the Boston marathon did not go independent until 1986 - until then it was run by the Orson Welles. So, it's only been an "independent" marathon for 29 years now. Secondly, even if they want to claim that all 40 years should be counted as independent, because it's independent NOW, the fact remains that Cleveland's first marathon pre-dates the Boston marathon, and has, without question, been independent of any theater chain for it's entire 40 years.

Ok, a different definition of "independent"... let's go with that one. Cleveland's marathon is put on by students, not-for-profit. Boston's marathon is put on by a professional event organizer, FOR profit. Granted, they both identify as "fans," I'm sure... but, the professional (for-profit) vs. non-professional (not-for-profit) status of the organizers is, again, going to mean that, if THAT'S the definition of "independent" the Bostonians are asserting, Cleveland has a greater claim to the title.

Mind you, I'm not knocking small business, or saying that its an inferior marathon in any way. It's fine with me that the Boston marathon is generating income for people. I'm a small business owner myself, in a fandom based business (I own a hobby game and comic book store). I'm only pointing out that the Bostonians are wrong, no matter how they try to slice it. They're just splitting hairs by trying to claim that their marathon is the oldest "independent" marathon.

But the point of not parsing the word "independent" or of getting into any discussion that somehow ranks one Marathon vs. the other is that both have their points. One remaining viable as a non-profit the other has expanded to showing literally a hundred shorts, indies and other stuff of interest.
Personally I feel that Cleveland has lost some of its spark the last few years while Boston has expanded its scope (although this year I think that Columbus wins for best list.)So poking a little fun at pompous assertions, sure. Wrangling over real merits?
Both win for 40 years of events.

Please don't get me wrong - that was not my intention.
pogo wrote:

My intention was the former, NOT the latter. Nowhere did I say one was BETTER than the other. In fact, I tried to point out that the "independent" status, or lack of, has nothing to do with the quality of the events.

Wait... I thought we weren't ranking the marathons? :)
Heh - well, ok, as long as that topic has been brought up...
Actually, I prefer the Boston marathon, as well. If I were to offer up my opinion as an indicator of quality, I would say that the Boston marathon is superior in most ways, while the Cleveland marathon does have its charms - but, of course, that's just my opinion - feel free to disagree! :)

Quality has nothing to do with which marathon has been running longer, though - entirely separate issue. You were right to point out to them that their claim of being the "longest-running" marathon is incorrect. I was meaning to back you up, Pogo - not start an argument with you. :) My issue, if there is one, is with any Bostonians who are too haughty to accept that truth.

Not only will Special Effects titan DOUGLAS TRUMBULL be there to introduce 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, but there will be Live Music to accompany the restored copy of CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI! (details tba).

LA,
The FESTIVAL starts tomorrow. Can you say anything about it?
In better weather I would be there. It actually sounds much more interesting than does the Marathon.

On another note. My step-mom went to school with Roger Moore, the star of the Thon film Moonraker. They were together at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. (RADA)
She has told me a few stories about him, but my favorite comment was (exact quote - made in her Brit. upper crust stage accent)
"Poor dear. He never could act."

Hmmm. I thought the restored score was one of the big deals for this version. Not that I'm saying it's a better option, but it was one of the things I was curious to see. Er, well, to hear I guess.
