Twilight Zone: "Deaths-Head Revisited"
Episode 74
First aired: November 10, 1961

A Mr. Schmidt returns to a small Bavarian village near Munich. The innkeeper there is very frightened of him because he reminds her of something and someone terrible from the past—in relation to the concentration camp left over from a more hateful time in history which still stands nearby.

Our Mr. Schmidt visits this camp and it is here we discover who he really is and the atrocities for which he is responsible. His real name is Gunther Lutze and he once was a Nazi SS Captain in charge of those poor souls tortured and mutilated in those horrid camps. It was Lutze himself behind his share of the torment. Lutze remembers this proudly and actually seems to take pride in his evil doings.

Suddenly he notices another visitor—a man named Alfred Becker who is strangely enough dressed as he was in the camp (he was a former prisoner) and is still as youthful looking. Lutze assumes he is now the caretaker of the place but the words spoken by Becker begins to trigger Lutze's memory and soon he realizes that he is now on trial for his crimes against humanity—and this frightful court consists of those who he had condemned and tormented actually returned from the grave for retribution!

This episode features outstanding work from its lead actors—Oscar Beregi in the role of the heartless, cruel, and proud Captain Lutze (which certainly must have been a very challenging role) is very good and Joseph Schildkraut in the role of Alfred Becker speaks words with such passion and power that you almost believe he actually is Becker, a prisoner who had long suffered at the hands of Lutze. Serling's very powerful feelings against what did happen in camps like this is very evident and the episode's message of never forgetting the horrors of the past lest we repeat them rings true too.
