I recently informed Metaluna of my hopes for a FLASH GORDON retrospective a la last year's BATMAN tribute, but added that FLESH GORDON was not on my want list. So Jeff emailed this afternoon from the annual film exhibitors' convention ShoWest in, where else, Las Vegas, that a print of FLESH GORDON has popped up on our radar. My understanding is that there are both X and R rated versions out there. I don't know which version this is. Meanwhile we haven't had much luck tracking down a print of the 1980 version, which I consider great fun in a stupid sort of way. Years ago the Boston Sci-Fi Marathon crowd seized on the Queen theme song and to this day always follow any mention of "Flash" with an audience supplied "Ah-Ahhh"!

So as an informal poll of a very rarefied group of marathoids I'd like to hear your thoughts on whether we should add FLESH GORDON to the lineup. And please bear in mind the stunned reaction to the X-rated CAFE FLESH trailer in the middle of the night a few years ago. Don't want to go back there.

Please, weigh in....

I'm not sure if I saw the R or X-Rated version, but it was pretty adult. I think it would work at the marathon in the wee hours and it is hilarious in spots. The problem I see with it this year is that with the confirmed lineup as is, we already have the more intense, adult oriented cheese factor tightly sewn up amongst 3 films. So my vote would be no for this year but yes in general. Am I making sense? I like to see a good balance of cheese with more "serious" stuff, and I think FLESH GORDON in this year's lineup would be going a bit overboard.

Please continue persuing the 1980 version (although it is cheesy, it has never played and it is overdue) and please announce more films soon! I'm anxious!

This thread is getting long, can we maybe start a confirmed lineup sticky?

Though I would think that Flesh Gordon could be a fun marathon movie, I would just be concerned about any problems that might arise if an X rated film were shown. If an X-rated film were part of the marathon, would you even be able to sell tickets to or admit minors?

I think an R-rated film should be the limit.

Please though... Flash Gordon (1980) would be great.

You'll get a "Double Thumbs Up" from me on the 1980 "Flash Gordon" and "Flesh Gordon" both. So long as you make sure it runs well after midnight you'll be fine (with either version ... even the "X" version is pretty lame by today's standards.)

Oh, and as things get posted by Bruce here, I'm updating the announcement in the "World Watch Wire", so I don't think there's a pressing need to start a new sticky.

I agree with Jack. I think adult cheese is doing fun. But I want to stress the need for adult serious and more importantly adult violent action movies. Flach Gordon and Flesh Gordon together at another marathon would be fun though.

I concur with the others, in the 3 am slot or thereabout Flesh Gordon might be okay. Just give folks a heads up in case they have any kids that are with them and still awake.

I agree with the trend here. No to Flesh this year. Did that come out right? Yes to Flash 1980 or any other Flash. This still doesn't sound right.

I'm in the "no" camp. As stated before, the lineup is ALL schlocky films so far.

KING DINOSAUR (1955)
FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE SPACEMONSTER (1965)
MINDWARP: AN INFINITY OF TERROR aka GALAXY OF TERROR (1981)
CHOPPING MALL (1986)
SLITHER (2006)

Adding another schlocky film, I feel, will just throw the balance off. OK, I will admit that I haven't seen all of these films, so I can't reeeeaaally say they are schlocky, so I am judging by the descriptions and publicity.

I do agree that if we can find a print of the 1980 Flash Gordon, then a double feature would great, just not for this marathon. I like it when the lineups have variety and though the lineup is currently schlock heavy, I was assuming the rest would be balanced out with classics and premieres.

Anyway, that's my opinion.

A Flash Gordon/Flesh Gordon "double feature" is a good ideal. Both movies must run after 12AM. Plus if there still minors in the audience the MGT must HAVE A DISCLAIMER that Flesh Gordon have adult content.

Then there was that one year when the trailer for Cafe Flesh pops up. The marathonoids was awfully quiet. If Flesh is shown how about the Cafe Flesh trailer?

Still room for many other flicks: Logan's Run,TerrorVision,Infra Man,DAy The World Ended,Plan 9,The Creeping Terror, etc. Many choices still available.

I am in the NO camp for Flash or Flesh Gordon. Never really liked either one.

Wouldn't mind something like MegaForce or Eliminators though. Still plenty of options. Movie versions of Buck Rogers and Battlestar Galactica from the 70s would be VERY cool. How about the pilot movie for Misfits of Science? Johnny Sokko(Voyage Into Space)?

Choose wisely and let's definetly have 12 features.

And I see the "schlocky" choices as NON BORING. So bring'em on.

At the 2005 Marathon, we were prepping to bask in the absurd glory of THE APPLE with a slate of trailers when, lo and behold, the preview for CAFE FLESH...um.....revealed itself on screen. It was after 10pm, but this was still a bit stronger material than we were used to at this event. The audience went quiet...followed by a "whoa"....and then a "hey". After it spooled into the cinematic ether, there was another brief moment of silence before a person of undeniable genius intoned "Thank You Bruce!" Fade out. Such is the stuff of which Marathon dreams are made.

Thanks. But I'm still a little unclear. Does this mean people liked it or they didn't?
