Alcon Entertainment announced today that it has partnered with Ridley Scott to produce a follow-up to his 1982 science fiction classic Blade Runner. The studio, which has past released The Blind Side and The Book of Eli, will put together a producing team of Scott, Broderick Johnson, Andrew Kosove, Bud Yorkin (who co-produced the original) and Cynthia Sikes Yorkin. Tim Gamble and Frank Giustra (CEOs of Thunderbird Films) will executive produce.

The announcement also revealed that Ridley Scott will in fact return to the director's chair for the new installment. The director is currently working on Prometheus, which is loosely based on his Alien franchise. As no script has been completed for a new Blade Runner, it is unclear whether it would serve as his next project.

No release date was revealed but Alcon Entertainment founders Kosove and Johnson offered an official statement: "It would be a gross understatement to say that we are elated Ridley Scott will shepherd this iconic story into a new, exciting direction. We are huge fans of Ridley's and of the original Blade Runner. This is once in a lifetime project for us."

Warner Bros. has agreed to act as distributor once again. The studio released the original Blade Runner, which starred Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer, in June of 1982 to modest box office results. Since then the film has gained a special prominence among critics and science fiction fans alike. Warner Bros. gave the film a 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray release back in December of 2007.

Ridley Scott's next feature, Prometheus is set to hit theaters next year on June 8th, 2012.
