Bad news and good!

The 50th Anniversary screening of FORBIDDEN PLANET
Robby the Robot in THE INVISIBLE BOY
The Columbus Premiere of GODZILLA FINAL WARS
Joss Whedon's Firefly feature SERENITY
George Romero's rarely seen THE CRAZIES
Keaton & Nicholson in Tim Burton's BATMAN

The bad news is that SOYLENT GREEN has fallen through.
The good news is that we've got another 'seventies touchstone, WESTWORLD.
And also, the restored 1933 KING KONG is back in the lineup.

We're looking for one more feature from among several possible premieres.

This will be the fewest features we've ever shown, but we have many, many more extras and surprises than ever before. All the old favorites and lots more!

Excellent news! By my count that's seven, count 'em, seven features that are new to the Marathon. I've been dying to see WESTWORLD on the big screen and FINAL WARS should be fun with this crowd. INVISIBLE BOY showed in Boston a few years back; I was surprised by how much I liked it. Now where's INFRA-MAN to finish off the lineup?

I can only hope this means more shorts and trailers. For me, that's the best part of the 'thon. Any chance that this is the collection of shorts from the Seattle Science Fiction Musuem that's been mentioned?

Either way, Westworld is a great addition. I've always thought it would be a perfect marathon movie. And since Soylent Green won't be showing, I suppose I can let you guys in on a little secret (SPOILER ALERT): It turns out it was people.

Fry: "What if it turns out the secret ingredient in Slurm ... was PEOPLE?!?"
Leela: "They already have a soda like that ... Soylent Cola."
Fry: "Oh, how does it taste?"
Leela: "It varies from person to person."

I don't mind only 9 features. By the looks of this awesome lineup, I won't mind if the premiere is a steaming pile of poo (which it is about 50% of the time). I agree that trailers and shorts are a highlight for me as well. I usually schedule my bathroom and food breaks for the middle of features. :)

One note about pacing: The breaks between films has been a little long the past few years. I don't know if this is because of time needed for the projection booth or not, but I would prefer as little dead time as possible. Waiting for 20 minutes to a half hour with nothing going on (not including announcements, contests, etc.) just feels like wasted time to me.

Anyway, thanks for the great finds, Bruce! I'm sure even all you Serenity/recent film haters out there would agree you can't go wrong with the rest of the lineup!

We have a confirmation that we will have a collection from the 1st Annual Science Fiction Short Film Festival courtesy of Seattle's new Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame. Their festival included 20 films that ran about 4 hours total. I don't have detailed info on exactly which ones we'll be including, but I'm pretty sure that, at the least, we'll have the eight Festival award winners....

This is incredible news. In my opinion, this is much better than getting another movie, because this is stuff that we'd never see anywhere else. Just looking through the synopses (synopsises?) on the linked website, it looks like there's a remarkable variety of stuff. Should be great!

Is this the sort of thing that would be shown in one big block, or would the individual shorts be sprinkled throughout the day?

How they're shown will be a function of what format they're available in and how masochistic the projection staff is willing to be.

And paying a bit more attention, I see now that there are six award winners (of eight awards).

So the short films will be interesting and it is cool to be able to see some things we'd never see otherwise. But I'd still love to see one or two more features. 10 is a nice round number. Cut out some (but not all) of the Batman serials and some of the loooong "educational" shorts and keep a reel of extra trailers ready to add or delete depending on our time schedule. I imagine that the Gateway would be a harder venue to run too late in. But nine features just doesn't seem right on any level. Not that that would keep me away but it just sounds like a jog, not a marathon.

More shorts in the lineup is great news. A unique opportunity that we can't see anywhere else.

In my opinion, the shorts should be shown in blocks. Or one big chunk if it's only a couple of hours. Also, I think the six award winners are probably all that we need. I've been to a couple film festivals and usually half of the films aren't all that great. So I don't think it's necessary to show every film that played at this festival. Maybe if you are able to screen them ahead of time to see what is worth our time.

I noticed that Serenity is not on the list on any of the info pages. Is it still on the schedule? I'm sure this would be the first one out if something big comes together anyway.
