I have not been keeping up with this tread but I would like to add (if no one else did) "Jason X" takes place after the apocalypse....Just sayin'

That's right. I didn't think about that.

SPOILER ALERT FOR "JASON X" AHEAD!!!

So while Jason was asleep, the world ended. Aww, that would suck to miss the apocalypse. If we can't stop the apocalypse, we might as well enjoy the very sights and sounds of it in all of its terrifying glory. Am I right?

.........As for Another Earth and Melancholia showing: terrible idea! I liked Melancholia a lot but it is sloooooooooow and long and would go over terribly with this crowd. I haven't seen Another Earth, but I imagine the same thing. We're still debating the sci-fi merits of Happy Accidents, which was a cute, fun, thinking-man's romantic comedy (with sci-fi themes). And it was short and fairly well-paced but for some reason people on this board seem to hate it. Yet they don't seem to complain as much about Late For Dinner for some reason (which I also liked). A 2 and a half hour Danish film about depression is about the best way to kill this event.

I urge all serious SF and film fans in general to see both MELANCHOLIA and ANOTHER EARTH - unfortunately, neither is ideal Marathon viewing. The opening and closing sequences in MELANCHOLIA are some of the most starkly beautiful imagery you will likely see all year, but there is that little problem of the slow 'melancholic' 125 minutes in between!

My review of ANOTHER EARTH is here (along with ATTACK THE BLOCK, which is playing at the Boston Marathon in Feb. and will likely play in Columbus in Ohio methinks): viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1194

I realize that my apocalypse theme idea wouldn't be the most popular idea. That's perfectly understandable, so here is my alternative wish list of films that I would love to see at the 2012 Columbus Sci Fi Marathon:

Tron
Tron Legacy
Altered States
Alien Raiders
Christmas On Mars
Mars Attacks
Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone
Krull
Jason X
Android
Dark Star
Roots Search
The Thing (2011)
Deadly Friend

Yes, because it's not a remake. It's a prequel. I seen it and I have to say it is one of the best, most enjoyable films I've seen in 2011. It explains what happens before "The Thing" (1982). Also, it stars one of the hottest women on Earth, Mary Elizabeth Winstead. She's great in anything.

The Thing (2011) is a sad attempt to cash in on the classic.

Here is some more
Godzilla the non Raymond Burr version
Supergirl
Batman Returns
Roger Corman's Frankenstein
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Buck Rogers in the 25th Century pilot tv movie.

I GIGANTIC "BOO" to playing The Thing 2011! What a pointless movie! Serves no purpose other than to try to make a quick buck and it didn't even do that. Though I did like the scene where the CGI CGI'd the CGI right when the CGI was going to CGI. That was pretty cool. Why does a movie with almost 30 years in film "advances" feel so much more dated and irrelevant than John Carpenter's classic? I'm always against showing big releases from the previous year. If we have to get something from 2011, it should be something good that few people have seen like Attack the Block.

Screening The Thing (2011) is like screening Star Wars Episode I. Do we need to sit and watch SW Episode I? Heck I've haven't watch Episode I Blu Ray yet.

I'd love to see Disney's The Black Hole make it to the marathon one of these years.

In addition to that, I'm still jonesing for the day Voyage of the Rock Aliens makes its debut.

I have not seen THE THING 2011 yet so I think it would be cool to Book End the marathon, start with THE THING 2011 (Since its a Prequel) and end the marathon with JOHN CARPENTER'S THE THING!!

That sounds like a pretty cool idea actually.

Though I think The Thing bookends might be better suited to the horror marathon.

Didn't The Thing (1982) screened at the First Shock Around the Clock? If so it is too soon in my opinion.

How about some 1980's fantasy films.
Ice Pirates
Willow
Young Sherlock Homes
The Dark Crystal
Legend

How can I be a John Carpenter hater when I didn't like the Thing 2011? I do have all of his good films on DVD and Blu Ray. Heck I went out and got They Live after I watched the movie on TCM overnight.
