I must say that I'm really sick of the recent trend of playing documentaries every year now. Once every ten years, is fine but this is becoming a trend that I think really hurts the marathons. For every doc we screen (always of video too) that's a classic film we aren't screening in its place. I know some people liked the Star Wars doc last year, but I think at least 85% of the crowd would've preferred Soylent Green or Predator (or whatever 70s and 80s classic you prefer) play in its place. And now this year we're getting Captains...great. Not only is Star Trek pretty divisive among fans, now we get a doc about a film series that a great many people couldn't care less about. I'm sure some people will post about how everyone should love Star Trek if they're at a sci-fi marathon etc.... But they don't and I'm pretty sure Bruce knows this which is why the only Star Trek films that've played are parts 1, 2 and the remake. I personally can't stand Star Trek (except Wrath of Khan and the remake) but I'd still prefer the worst Star Trek film to a documentary about Star Trek. This is supposed to be a Science FICTION marathon.... PLEASE NO MORE DOCUMENTARIES IN THE FUTURE!

Actually, I think a "documentary in the future" would be quite interesting.

I'd like to see what the future is like from a documentarian's perspective. The trick is figuring out how to get all that footage of the future back here to us in the past...I mean present...whatever.

Maybe Jake Gyllenhaal could bring it to us incrementally, like 8 minutes at a time.

I don't mind docs but was really hoping to see Creep! or The Sci-Fi Boys(Which everyone should see). The Sci-Fi Boys kind of brings tears to my eyes since I grew up as a young "monster kid" in the 70s and I feel almost a kinship to people like John Landis,Uncle Forry,Bob Burns,Paul Davids and others because of that era. Same as Kenny and Co. and The Double McGuffin take me right back to the 70s whenever I watch them.
I would indeed like to see more flicks like TerrorVision,Godzilla films or Star Odyssey but I'll hold my criticism till I see The Captains. I don't see anything wrong with a doc as a premiere.

I'm fine with Docs. Sometimes they are more entertaining than some of the other films. Keep them.

I too am not a fan of showing documentaries unless it's once every 5 years or so, but that's just my opinion. I love documentary, but I don't feel they fit the spirit of the marathon. Also, the fact they are shown on video also hurts. Getting a premiere in general that isn't on video though is tough these days because unless it is a BIG premiere, there probably are not film prints.

I'm kind of agnostic on the subject. In Boston, most of the docs have gone over very well. The one exception is when a World's Fair film (WORLD OF TOMORROW) was shown. A near riot broke out. It was a slow and pokey film, but, I really liked it when I saw it on PBS before it played at the Marathon. The hostility there certainly ruined that screening! Most docs there have been scheduled around Dinner Break times, so that the folks who don't care to see a Documentary, can skip out for some food (or a nap).

With CAPTAINS there is also the matter that is a faux "Premiere". It debuted on Cable last July and has been re-run ever since and can be watched online. I'd still wouldn't mind seeing it, but, DVD projection kind of lessens that desire.

P.S. As regards to "CREEP!", the movie isn't even done yet. My writing partner has been interviewed for the movie (we did a piece on the film) and the guy just finished raising funds to begin principal production. It's a ways off.
