I got John Carpenter's THE THING on HD-DVD on Saturday and watched it Saturday evening and WOW the picture was so clear and perfect I was able to see things I have never seen before. I have seen John Carpenter's THE THING twice on the big screen, many times on HBO, cable, VHS, Laserdisc and DVD but it was not until HD-DVD that I noticed Richard Dysart (Dr. Copper) has a nose ring...ok so how many men had nose rings in 1982? and this is not a small stud it's a hoop ring. Has anyone else ever noticed this?

BEGIN RANT... Why is it that America and American companies always make the wrong choice? Every comparison review I have read has clearly stated HD-DVD is better than Blu-Ray but now it looks like we are gonna be stuck with Blu-Ray now that Warner Bros has decided to back Blu-Ray, I imagine it won't be long until Universal and Paramount jump ship as well....END RANT!

I completely agree. Blu Ray hasn’t been able to handle the level of special features that HD has until just recently … VERY recently, yet many reviewers and movie studios claim that Blu ray is superior … what a load of crap. I think some money is being passed under the table.

Looks like Paramount is dropping HD-DVD now, well I guess the only silver lining around this cloud is we should be able to pick up HD-DVD's very cheap in the near future.

As long as Universal doesn’t jump ship, HD still has a fighting chance.

I’m a huge HD-DVD supporter. I believe that the best feature high definition movies provide is the pip track that shows behind the scenes footage, interviews, concept art, etc, while the movie plays' and plays them at the appropriate scenes. HD-DVD has had this feature for quite some time, but blu-ray has only started putting this feature on their discs within the last month or two.

With that being said, four of the six major studios have gone blu-ray only. The largest video rental company, Blockbuster, has gone blu-ray only. Retailers Target and Wal-Mart are providing more wall space for Blu-ray and less for HD-DVD. Yesterday, Best Buy announced that they will start recommending Blu-Ray over HD-DVD. And finally, I got an e-mail this morning from online video rental company Netflix stating that they will be phasing out their stock of HD-DVD and will be Blu-ray only by the end of the year.

I must regretfully admit defeat … the war is almost over and I believe blu-ray will emerge victorious.

And you can get a spare player or two cheap as well, since you won't be able to replace them in a few years except via ebay.

I saw this while I was goofing around:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=320223621650&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT&ih=011

That would be kinda cool if any of you have some spare change you want to spend on memorabilia.
