John Wyndham's classic sci-fi novel "The Day of the Triffids" is finally getting the big screen treatment, and its producers told Variety that they decided it was time to make the story into a feature film because of the advances in 3D technology, which we will willingly credit to "Avatar."
"We are confident that with the new technological advances in 3D production, we have the tools with which to create Wyndham's iconic vision of Armageddon," said producer Michael Preger, who also worked on the 2009 BBC1 miniseries version of the story.
"Day of the Triffids" was first published in 1951, and is set in the future after a bizarre meteor shower leaves much of the world's population blind. Genetically altered plants named Triffids, which have three legs and contain poisonous venom, have started to encroach on humanity, and it is up to several remaining sighted people to try to lead humanity to survival.
Preger's production company first purchased screen rights to the novel since 1991, and he has worked with "Transformers" producer Dan Murphy for more than a decade to try to find a way to bring the novel to film. They felt that previous film technology was not capable of conveying the proper sense of horror that the story needs.
"This original classic has still to be successfully envisioned on the screen," said Murphy. "It is a story that strikes at the heart of what it means to be human -- and does so in an intensely cinematic way."
