...because it's never too early.

We have finally passed the 6 month mark after all.

Anyway, to start with I hear that a pristine print of Carpenter's The THING played at Chicago's horror marathon and was a big hit. This film is long overdue for a marathon repeat.

Oh, and Carpenter's last good movie THEY LIVE has also played a couple festivals this year, so there's a print of that somewhere, too.
Surely we can squeeze in at least one good Carpenter film, eh?

I'd love to see both version of The Thing. Those have been some of my favorite marathons, when they's done the then and now type of thing. Though in the case of the Thing, it would be the then and not as then. :)

I'd like to put a vote in for Donnie Darko. Also Logan's Run.

I hope that Bruce can snag that THING print before they screw up the remake that's in pre-production.

Still looks like a good list, there are a few there I would love to see, the rest I wouldn't mind and none I would really hate, though V for Vendetta is pretty recent. Though, as I get older I'm starting to soften on that position.

This is only tangentially SciFi, but Mike Judge's IDIOCRACY is a hoot and was seen by a total of like three people in the cinemas.

THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN is also the bomb.

It got limited release, I wouldn't mind seeing Idiocracy. Early guest request for Fritz the Nite Owl.

A spendid idea IMHO. 8)

Granted only Columbus locals and certain other Ohio attendees may know who he is or care for that matter, but I most certainly take pride in being one of them.

For those who are unfamilar, Fritz the nite Owl was a late night movie host who has had a series of hosting jobs dating all the way back to the 70s. He doesn't do it anymore but those of us who grew up watching him will never forget him. As you can see I have an old school mug shot of him as my avatar. 8)

I would love to see Idiocracy as well. Everything I have heard says it is worth a look, and yet it showed very few places. Especially if Columbus was not one of those places, I hope they try and track down a print for the marathon.

I agree - Idiocracy would be a great marathon film, if they could possibly get a print. Since it only played like three cities, who knows how many prints were even made. The movie is out on DVD this week, but I'd love to see it on the big screen at the marathon.

Don't get me wrong, the film is a mess. It was essentially taken away from Mike Judge, chopped up and retrofitted with unnecessary narration to fill in the gaps. Still, what is there is really funny. It's just a shame that Fox didn't trust Judge (or the American people, for that matter) enough to release his version of it. Still, I think it would play very well with the Marathoid audience. It's not the kind of film that will appeal to an everyday audience, especially the group of people that the film satirizes. However, I tend to think that those people are also not generally the ones who come to the Marathon; and if they are, frak 'em if they can't take a joke.

I am sure we will see at least one film released in 2006 at the marathon this year. There is usually one obvious choice of an overlooked or underapreciated film from the past year in the lineup. Recent examples that come to mind are Equilibrium, 28 Days Later, Sky Captain, and Serenity. Well, the interesting thing this year is that there are at least 4 candidates for this inevitable marathon slot this year:
A SCANNER DARKLY
IDIOCRACY
THE FOUNTAIN
SLITHER

Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head, any others?
I'm sure at least one will be on the schedule.

I would like to see Idiocracy. My guess is A Scanner Darkly, or perhaps Fountain, though I think it is a long shot. I would be suprised to see Slither. Of course it all comes down to print availability which means Idiocracy is probably the longest shot.

Wow, it's almost marathon season!

A couple thoughts while I'm thinking of them.
How about PITCH BLACK? Not a classic by any stretch, but a decent enough little film and enough time has passed for it not to seem too "recent" I think.

Also, in honor of the highly lauded masterpiece finally making it to wide release this week, PAN'S LABYRINTH, how about Del Toro's first film, CRONOS?
