Did you know that the word "soporific" was once used on the message board? No? Well, that's possibly because it was used on the old drexel.net message board that was wiped clean many moons ago, which (in part) prompted the creation of this new and independent online forum for all things Marathoid.

But like so many stray radio signals floating in the interstellar ether, those long lost forum postings still exist. You probably wouldn't be surprised to know that I spend quite a bit of time trolling the web for old Marathon-related items. I had assumed that post-deletion, the forum archives were gone for good. But today, I finally happened upon many of them while plugging in the Drexel webpage to the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. For convenience's sake, I've posted links below to some of the pages that still have active links. Some of them turn up dead, but there's a surprising amount of material that's still active.

So...

THRILL to the legendary uprising to dump Contact from the 2002 Sci-Fi Marathon lineup!

CHILL at the sight of eloquent posts from people who don't attend the Marathons anymore!

LAUGH as you see loyal Marathoids salivatingly speculate about getting Raimi's Spider-Man for a premiere!

CRY as you remember when Tim Martin still posted under his real name and not as Jaws3Dfan (which is almost as bad as when he changed his handle to SuspiriaFan#1 for those two odd months back in '04).

WALK THE OTHER WAY as you marvel at Steve Carter's rabid Marathophilia!

But seriously, there's are some really great and in-depth threads in this treasure trove, so dive in and maybe we can reminisce on this, our current forum home.

Wow what a blast from the past, I had totally forgotten about Joe Neff defending the 2004 remake of Dawn of The Dead calling it "better than the original, Geoerge Romero should aspire to be more like Director Zack Snyder"

Thanks for digging these up Joe!!

As the originator of the whole "let's get Spider-man as a premiere" discussion, let me just say that this is one of my favorite things about internet forums: nobody ever gets sarcasm! I revel in all the "ha! Gotcha!" responses from my unsuspecting anonymous internet pals. It makes me sit back and bite down harder on my Calabash while murmuring "Take that, sons of b-words!"

I have gotten many a chuckle from these blasts from the past, Mr. Neff, thanks for sharing. Although I don't blame you for your opinion on Snyder's Dead remake (which I respectfully disagree with), I am curious if 6 years later your opinion on his "potential" has changed. Recent history also suggests that we shouldn't be dismissive of someone for getting their feet wet as a "music video" director.

Nah. The so-called "sarcMark" takes away all the fun, it's even less cool than using a traditional emoticon. And I always wondered how a huge horror fan like yourself could have such a negative reaction to such an important film. It's like saying "I really love zombie movies, but Romero's 1978 Dawn of the Dead really sucks!" I know you explained it before, but I can't see how anyone could find that movie "boring," especially considering the soundtrack alone.

Wasn't Ridley Scott was some sort of commercial director before he directed films?

James Gunn got his start with Troma.

I have noticed a tendency to think of this as a bad thing - mostly because of Michael Bay giving music video directors a bad name. But, what about people like David Fincher, Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, Gore Verbinski, Alex Proyas, Anton Corbijn (if you haven't seen Control yet - go out and get it right NOW), and, yes Zach Snyder (I happen to think the guy is a good director, though not an amazing one)?

Music videos, and music video directors, are just like anything else - most of them are bad, a lot are mediocre, and a few are real gems. What difference does it make if someone came up through music videos, commercials, tv sitcoms, student films, or whatever? The only type of director that I would venture to guess would universally make a bad feature film director would be... porn directors. :)

Leave it to Scott to resurrect a two year old thread...and more power to him.

You're absolutely right: some of the most interesting modern directors have cut their teeth in music videos. Hey, commercials are not an automatic disqualifier for artistic success. Just look at the careers of Saul Bass and Pablo Ferro, both of whom produced some of the most radical, cutting edge, experimental adwork AND filmwork of their time. The tendency to blame music video directors for the death of film (whatever that term might, ya know, actually mean or anything) overlooks the studios' progressive inclination to quicken the pace of cuts, which (even though it ultimately was derived from the music video form) is not necessarily an indictment of those music video directors. Now you could argue that audiences raised on 3-5 minute music clips were more likely to be open to quick cutting and vapid content, but the works of directors like Fincher and Jonze display a sense of visual, thematic and narrative complexity that's far removed from the blipvert mentality we often associate with them (apologies to Max Headroom.)

Hehe - I forgot to say, "Thread Necro!"

But, wasn't the whole point of this thread to reminisce? Therefore, bringing it back from the dead seems appropriate. :)

... Actually, I just didn't notice that it hadn't been replied to in so long. Since it was a sticky thread, I just clicked it, and saw something worth replying to, and didn't look at post dates. Sorry for breaking the rules of forum etiquette. :)

Wow, so cool. Thanks for posting this, Joe. So weird seeing my 15 year past self talking on these old threads, with a different handle. Also, one of my very best friends who was part of my trio group, who died in 2005 has postings in there, like getting to spend a few moments with him again. Such a bitter sweet experience getting to read his old posts. Thanks again.
