With the release of TRON LEGACY last week, we are at about a close for 2010.

What is the best Science Fiction Film released in 2010 that you saw?
WORST?

Frankly, I have been pretty laggard when it comes to seeing that many SF films that came out this year. I thought SPLICE was intriguing, but fell apart as it went along. IRON MAN II was a huge disappointment.

I guess the easy answer for most will be INCEPTION. Certainly, it has some astounding visuals and some mind-spinning concepts. But, like last year, there was a smaller more human scale film that appealed to me more than the 'obvious' frontrunner. In '09 it was a battle between the epic AVATAR and this past year's Marathon fave - MOON.

This year, I'd say the SF film that most affected me was NEVER LET ME GO. It's such a low key, non-high tech film that many wouldn't even categorize it as Science Fiction. But, like other 'soft' SF films such as THESE ARE THE DAMNED, FIVE, SECONDS or CHARLY, it takes the genre in stride to focus on the characters and the situations. Because it lacks any big Sfx setpieces, I'm not sure how NEVER LET ME GO would play at a Marathon, but it is certainly worth seeking out by attendees.

**********SPOILER ************

The biggest criticism I saw of the film is that the characters "didn't fight back" enough. And, that shows a fundamental misinterpretation of the story (based on a book). It is a cautionary tale, told effectively and true to the limits of its characters.

I have not seen THESE ARE THE DAMNED, FIVE, SECONDS or CHARLY but I would say INCEPTION and TRON LEGACY were the top 2 for me. Both films were visually stunning and I cared about the characters and what was happening to them. Also the highly over looked THE FOURTH KIND (Nov. 2009) was done incredibly well and had some truly frightening moments.
