This is not so much about movies as it is about respect for attendees to the marathons:
During the South Korean movie called "Inframan", wouldn't you know it, some guy referred to the main character, a South Korean man, as "Chinese". He also referred to him as "stupid" or whatever insulting term he used. So not only was he ignorantly incorrect about the race of the actor and the nationality of the movie, but also, in HIS eyes, "All Chinese people are stupid". It amazes me how amazingly ignorant many Americans are towards Asians. These people believe that ALL Asians are Chinese, know martial arts, speak like "ching chong chung", have slit eyes and are terrible drivers BECAUSE of said "slit eyes". I am SO GLAD that I am not one of the bigots that thinks of Asians this way. In 2014, Americans are still racist of Asians. Racist attitudes towards blacks have improved since the last 50 years, so why not Asians? First of all, all it would take is a Google search to see that there ARE Asian countries on Earth besides China! Did these racist Americans not attend Social Studies class? HOW do they think China is the ONLY Asian country on Earth?? Second, while probably every martial art was invented in Asia, not every single Asian person on Earth knows a martial art, just like not every American is a fan of football. I honestly don't know why Asians have the eye shape that they do, but it does not make me think any less of them, and if the shape of their eyes prohibited their ability to see, why is it that Asians can create such amazing things with perfect precision, such as Japanese people creating kitana swords, which happen to be the greatest swords ever made? Why would Asians create buildings, electronics, motor vehicles, etc. if they couldn't see clearly? How many of these ignorant racist Americans use or have used a product by an Asian company such as Nintendo, Hyundai, Sony, Mitsubishi or Toyota? All Asian products that are quite popular in America. It is for this reason alone that The Asian Festival exists, to open up American's eyes who most of which are more blind than any Asian person they imagine is. My point of this tirade is really to send a message out to that guy and people like him that "When an Asian movie shows at one of the 24 hour movie marathons in Columbus, please show some respect by not bashing an entire race, since not everyone is as ignorant as you. Thanks. I want to enjoy myself at the Ohio marathons, and when I hear someone say something so stupid, it really ticks me off, and I am putting it G rated. I just wanted to point out an interesting thing I noticed about racial acceptance, including in movies. I understand that everyone at the marathons has Freedom Of Speech. I just want people like this to know that insults they make DO offend me, lest they think no one else cares. This message isn't about hate, it's about love, for Asian culture.

Uhm.

Your general points about racism are correct. People being racist towards an entire culture are backwards and ignorant and have no place in polite society.

Your specifics are way off, however.

First off, Inframan is not a South Korean film. It was made in Hong Kong, and is filmed in Mandarin. Which is a dialect of Chinese. Inframan is historically significant, in fact, for being the first Chinese superhero on film. So, you're wrong. The character and the film are Chinese. Someone saying that it's Chinese isn't making a broad assumption that is ignorant of the different nationalities and ethnicities in the continent of Asia - they're actually being precise.

(Support: IMDB, Wikipedia)

Secondly, referring to the main character as stupid does not have to mean that the person was making a broad assumption about the character's race as a whole. The main character in Inframan is, in fact, not the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree. This doesn't mean all Chinese people are dumb, any more than the fact that Jack Burton in Big Trouble in Little China being a flaming idiot means all Americans are dumb, or any more than the fact that the character of Benny in The Mummy means all people of Arabic decent are dumb.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

(And for the record, my Sister in Law is Chinese.)

I stand (or SIT) corrected. My mistake. I didn't mean to jump to conclusions. I failed to do my research. I know I shouldn't let little stuff like this get to me. I know how crazy it seems. I just love Asians and appreciate them, although I am a tad bit confused why you mentioned your sister in law. Everything you said has absolute truth no matter who you're related to. I believe you, no worries. :) I think I know who you're talking about. She is very nice.
