Lost bees signal delicate web of existence
April 22, 2007
A German scientific report suggests disturbing news: that radiation from now ubiquitous cell phone towers could be harming honeybee populations.
Who cares about bees? We all should. Most agricultural crops, from row vegetables to fruit trees, depend on bees for pollination. Some claim that within four years of a bee-less world, we would all starve. That's scary.
The German researchers placed the phones inside hives. No bees returned. The researchers have concluded that the radiation from cell phones and other modern communication devices confuses bees by interfering with their homing systems and disturbing their learning and memory mechanisms. Wholesale collapse of hives has occurred in parts of North America and Europe.
