Except that wouldn't help with the idiots who pull out their phone to play a game. :)

Plus, I think there is a place for people to have cell phones with them in the theatre - doctors, or parents who have their kids with sitters. They just need to actually be respectful, put the phone on vibrate, and leave the theatre to take the call.

But what did doctors and parents do before cell phones? They could just go back to doing that.

Doctors had pagers. Parents had anxiety. :)

And pagers would probably be blocked by the same devices which would block cell phones.

In any case, the technology genie is out of the box, and can't be put back in. Putting cell phone jammers in theatres might make a few people happy, but would generate far more complaints - many of which would come from people who would never dream of pulling their phones out during the film.

Cinemas could put in a pager system like in restaurants when you are waiting for seating. People could 'check in' their phones and have the theater page them if they get a call. Would never happen, of course.

So, it's a battle of Mace Vs. Soda!!

An excellent MD friend of ours seems to be constantly on call. He co-coached his & my daughters' softball team. Because in addition to a general practice he was a supervisor of a busy ER, he constantly received cell phone calls. We never heard his phone ring. Usually there was an assistant coach. When they were really desperate, I even filled in. Jim would say something like "Gotta go." or "Cover please" to an assistant & disappear behind the stands, usually (but not always) returning in a few minutes.
If people really have to take calls there is absolutely no need to disturb others beyond standing up & walking out.
