Salo is a really fascinating film and one worth watching and discussing, but I'm not sure a marathon is the best venue for it. It's a serious film, not grade-z expolitation cannibal schlock and it would be odd to sandwich it in-between, say Evil Dead and Kung Fu Cannibals, for instance. I wouldn't be as concerned about the people it would repulse as I would be about the people who'd inevitably mock it.
But hey, just because a film is serious (or thought provoking) doesn't mean it wouldn't fit in the Marathon lineup. After all, this event isn't just about grade-z exploitation cannibal schlock. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
To clarify, I too think that SALO is a fascinating, beautifully shot, utterly sickening indictment of fascism and the larger corrupting influence of unmitigated power. But yes, in the context of the event, it probably wouldn't work.
And as soon as I write those words, I know I might be eating them with something we have planned for this year's Marathon. But more on that later...
Oh, and Bava's MASK OF SATAN a.k.a BLACK SUNDAY played at the 1992 24 Hour NIGHT OF THE LIVING DREXEL and also again at the 1998 14-hour BRIDE OF SHOCKTOBERFEST. But it's probably due for another screening one of these days. And if everything goes as planned, we'll have quite a few films this year that have never shown at past Marathons.
Certainly. I didn't mean to sound like the 'thons can't and don't include more serious matter. I've attended since the move to Grandview and titles like The Machinist, Let the Right One In, all the Cronenberg entries, etc. are far from light, cheesy fare.
You guys always bring great balance in style and theme and, no pun intended, execution. Light stuff, dark stuff, thoughtful stuff, brainless stuff, etc.
But Salo, man, I think that'd be a tough watch in the 'thon.
