MORE NEWWWWWSSSSSSS!!!!!!!
(hey! it worked last week)
I know this year's lineup is probably close to lock-down, but I re-watched a movie recently that, in the future, may make an interesting, though definitely off-beat entry.
Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117293/
To those unfamiliar, it is a documentary about three teenagers accused of brutally murdering and, in one case, mutilating three grade schoolers in the early 1990s in Arkansas.
(spoiler alert if you don't know the story or follow the news)
It's widely believed they were wrongly convicted -- though part 2 and the upcoming part 3 dives way more into that. After 18 years, they were freed last month.
Anyway, part 1 (1996), though a documentary set mostly in a courtroom, has horror elements throughout -- certainly the crime itself, then there is the Christian religious fervor from the victim's families and the rumors of occult/satanism among the accused who many think were singled out for wearing black, listening to metal, and a few other "outsider" tropes.
The 2.5 hour run time seems intimidating for a doc, but it moves briskly and is compelling throughout.
I watched it yesterday, so it is fresh in my mind.
(parts 1 & 2 are on HBO on demand right now for those curious).
I do not work for HBO.
