I'd also chime in that a reason why JAWS hasn't appeared at a horror marathon is the same as why I've never seen it associated with any horror fests in Boston or L.A. either - it's more a Hollywood blockbuster action flick than true horror. Sure, there is an overlap, and it certainly was the first film that made many of a certain age lose their popcorn, but, it really has more in common with the likes of DIE HARD & RAMBO than THE EXORCIST or FRIDAY THE 13TH in the public's consciousnes.

I do agree and most movie video rental stores put JAWS in the action/adventure section HOWEVER millions of people refuse to swim in the ocean due to their fear of sharks because JAWS scared the sh!t out of them. In many ways JAWS was among the first movies that could be labeled psychological thrillers. JAWS scares you at a primal level and that fear stays with you for the rest of your life, nobody goes to the beach with out JAWS coming to mind.

I do agree that JAWS would not be traditionally categorized as in the "horror" genre, or even thought of that way in the public conciousness. If I were to start thinking of my all-time personal favorite horror movies, it probably wouldn't even be on my radar initially. But at the same time it wouldn't be weird if it were announced as a feature of the horror marathon. I don't think anyone would be reacting with thoughts like "JAWS? Really? That's not a horror film!"

I also think that the Columbus marathons, especially those organized by Joe, have a history of stretching the boundaries of what defines something as one genre or another in order to showcase a great filmic experience which may or may not be strictly categorized. Even Hitchcock's classics like PSYCHO or THE BIRDS (celebrating it's 50th anniversary next year, hint hint) would probably be thought of as "thrillers" before horror. Also, a lineup of films with similar energy and tone throughout would not be as interesting.

The marathons have been alive for a while now, and have included a handful of worthy repeat showings of classic films. Time has been kind to JAWS and it's not going to lose it's status as an all-time classic anytime soon. I'm sure it will show up eventually, I just figure it's time is due sooner rather than later. AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON was long overdue, and it's finally coming this year, so I'm sure JAWS will swim his way into the lineup one of these years.

Now I'm really curious what this all time classic is that is impossible to find on 35mm that Joe is considering a digital screening of...

Now that I've pondered a bit, my next official guess at Joe's hint would be Ken Russell's THE DEVILS, only because it's elusiveness has been discussed here before...

A couple years ago there was an all night horror marathon at a Drive-in theater in Mansfield and they opened with JAWS and they even showed a JAWS rip-off called TENTACLES and everyone had a great time. Also a few years ago there was an all night horror marathon in Delaware that showed JAWS 2, not nearly the classic that the original JAWS is but once again it was fun and the audience loved it. There is nothing wrong with showing a fun movie at a horror event.

I think "man vs Beast" Movies like JAWS and PIRANHA can easily fit into the horror genre and would play well at any Horror Marathon.

Haha!! Man you will not let this go!! Aren't there like 7-8 threads (started by you) beating this dead, err, discussing this movie?!?! Relax and move on!! lol

I wouldn't mind seeing JAWS. I remember being one of those people who was afraid to go swimming out of the fear of shark attacks. I wouldn't go swimming in Lake Erie out of fear of getting pulled under by a man eating Shark!!

I thought Shark Night was the better rip off of Jaws or Jaws 3D.

Is it possible to track down footage of Grizzly II?

Cheesy 1980's horror

Attack of the Killer Tomatos
Return to Horror High
Driller Killer
The Toxic Avenger
Mother's Day Troma version
Critters
Basket Case

Loving all the Bruce Campbell talk, I'd gladly watch Evil Dead or any of it's line.

And speaking of suggestions, I'll throw this one out: The Woods. I'll bet a lot of folks missed this movie when it came out a few years ago. If you don't know anything about it, don't look anything up and spoil yourself. There's no big shocks or anything at the end, but it just seems to come with a slightly different attitude than many other horror flicks. It's a different type of horror movie that still doesn't stray too far from the norm. A pretty good balance of "slightly different but not too different", it'd probably fit nicely into a horror marathon lineup.

I also like the suggestion of Halloween 3. Not the greatest flick of all time, but one that holds up better on second viewing. (Seriously, the first time I spent the whole movie waiting for Michael to show up, and was disappointed in the end that he never did. But it deserves another chance from fans.) This would be a great choice, though in fact, for some reason right now, I'm in the mood to settle for just about any of the Friday/Halloween higher numbered entries.

Also, I completely LOVE the suggestion for Sleepaway Camp! Nuff said, bring it on! This is one of my favorite horror films of all time, for SO MANY different reasons! Make it happen!

*It's about high time that Re-Animator and the Evil Dead films made their way back in the lineup. Despite what we the vets might think, there's a whole new generation of Marathoid Mutants who've never seen these flicks on the BIG SCREEN. Jeffrey Combs is a guest that we're always ready to pursue, so we might hold off on his film(s) until we see if he's amenable to coming out. Oh yeah, there's also another landmark splatter film that's celebrating its 20th anniversary this year....hint hint.....

hmm, a hint...
let's see, 20 years old...

Okay, I know exactly what you're talking about, and I'd be totally in favor of showing this at the marathon too.

That said, there's another super awesome horror movie that came out 20 years ago: Candyman. Show 'em both!

Heck, show the others I mentioned above in this post and I think this would easily be the greatest marathon of all time by a country mile.

YES!! I suggested this a few years ago and still believe this would be fantastic!! I would even let him punch me in the face, since that's what he wants to do in his commercials.

The unproduced sequel to Grizzly supposed to star George Clooney as well.

It would be nice to screen Return to Killer Tomatos. The movie that pokes fun of product placement before people knew what product placement was about.

C.H.U.D can be consider before they were stars catagory. It stars the following: Daniel Stern (Home Alone) John Heard (Home Alone), Patricia Richardson (Home Improvment), John Goodman (Rosanne and The Artist), and Frankie Fiason. (Scilence of the Lambs)

Patricia Richardson is in the background of the photo shoot scene. She was in You Better Watch Out AKA Christmas Evil with a speaking role.
