I agree, it still holds up & one of the better remakes.

Quick question for Ghost, since you are obviously a Blu Ray freak like me. Have you purchased or seen the latest Blu Ray version released by Australia's Umbrella Entertainment? It lists it as a being coded for Australia Region, but I saw on Bloody-Disgusting site that it was indeed Region Free. It is next on my list to buy, but just wanted to see if you had seen or purchased it. I heard the Twilight Time limited release a few years back had major color issues & was super dark blue colors throughout the whole film.

My boss asked if I wanted to borrow his copy of SCOUTS GUIDE TO THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE, and I said, "Sure, why not?" It was...not great, but it did have some fun moments. Plus it got me in the mood to watch some better zombie movies, like DAWN OF THE DEAD, which I watched before the lineup was announced last year and then ended up sleeping through at the marathon.

Um...would you believe I bought it for a friend? Er, won it in a contest? Found it in a storm drain?

Haha in all seriousness, he does bring in random blu rays from time to time and ask if I want to borrow them, but his tastes don't exactly line up with mine. He also lent me EDGE OF TOMORROW (aka LIVE DIE REPEAT), which I had similar feelings about.

I played through VIRGINIA, which is a short, narrative-driven video game. It draws a lot from, and pays homage to, TWIN PEAKS, as well as a bit from X-FILES and other 90s era supernatural/weird mystery stories. Definitely a Lynchian vibe, with dreamlike imagery and an abstract story, all without any dialogue. I really enjoyed it, and it got me in the mood for some atmopsheric horror. Maybe I'll rewatch some of TWIN PEAKS...

Finally saw two films this weekend that I had often wanted to check out. First up was Bob Balaban's PARENTS, 1989's best "I think my parents might be cannibals" flick. We've played the trailer at various and sundry Marathons over the years, but I kept putting off watching it until now. And man, does it not disappoint! I won't give too many details for those of you who haven't seen it, but it's a perfectly pitched black comedy with enough tinges of the horrific to engender an authentic sense of dread. Awe. Some.

I didn't expect very much of the second film I watched, but I'll be damned if Stephen King's SLEEPWALKERS isn't a helluva lotta fun. That doesn't mean it's particularly that good as a film. But it chugs along nicely, with one utterly strange set piece after another. And the lovely Madchen Amick in her post-TWIN PEAKS prime is always an attraction.

Screenable source materials pending, it would be a lot of fun. We've actually brought it up over the years, but it's one of those weird titles that always seems to recede into the background (or which we blank on when it comes to assembling the lineup.) Part of that is probably because it's never attained the wider cult status that you'd think it would have by this point. But yeah, I'd definitely be up for it.

Continuing my way through season 3 of Penny Dreadful. There's one subplot I have some beef with, but otherwise I still highly recommend the show. It's sort of like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but it's dark and violent and serious and well done.

A friend forced a book on me called Rabid. It's a history of rabies, but a lot of it from a cultural POV. Turns out to be ideal reading for this weather. Lots of horror and horror tangential talk about vampire/werewolf/zombie myths and ties to the actual disease. Went through a section last night dealing with Richard Matheson's I Am Legend in relation to rabies. Pretty good stuff.

Watched both Don't Look Now and Mulholland Drive (which isn't strictly horror, but as Joe pointed out in best horror movies thread -- David Lynch evokes nightmares better than just about any director even if his movies aren't often hard horror).
Don't Look Now is such a great slllloooooowwww burn. I love it.

Last night I watched 2 movies THE SHALLOWS and Rob Zombie's 31

The Shallows was a good film, some good tension and overall a creepy shark film. In a world where there is a "Sharknado" sequel every year it's hard to scare people with a shark film like JAWS did back in 1975 but the basic concept of one person trying to survive a shark attack really works.

In 2009 if someone would have told me that Rob Zombie would make a film that's even worse than Halloween II I would have laughed in their face But yet he did it. I do give RZ credit for not making this an all out torture porn film but on the other side of the coin I felt the violence was uninspired and actually pretty lame. Basically 31 is a Low Rent, White Trash remake of Arnold Schwarzenegger's RUNNING MAN.

This weekend I watched HELLRAISER and HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II, neither of which I had seen before, and MULHOLLAND DRIVE, which I had seen before and is one of my favorites.

I really liked the bizarre 80s eroticism of HELLRAISER, and for the most part I thought HELLRAISER II was a great example of how to do a sci-fi/horror sequel - expand on the universe while still continuing the story and deepening the connections to the characters. The worst part was the evil doctor villain making stupid doctor puns at the end--he basically got turned into a hell demon serving a dark, unknowable god (which was really cool), yet he still makes terrible "Looks like the doctor is IN" type quips.

Per my usual and annual tradition, I will be watching the Nightmare Before Christmas tonight. I usually watch this on the 1st of the month but this weekend was a bit hectic, so I'll be catching up tonight. From there, I'm going to try and watch at least one flick a day until our pre-thon on the 14th then the Marathon on the 15th.

It's been a slow start to the Halloween season for me but I hope to make up for that by going to both of Chicago's 2 horror marathons (Neither of which has a lineup quite as great as Joe and Bruce have served up). I was out of town for a week and had to catch up on the DVR.

Last night I watched Strip Nude For Your Killer...which wasn't great but definitely sleazy. Surprised I hadn't seen it before. I got the Scream Factory blu-ray's of Carrie and Child's Play that I plan to watch this week.
