The Ohio Sci-Fi and Horror Marathons

Is it just me or has Monster Fest on AMC really gone to hell? This was the same special programming that showed Mad Monster Party and got a new DVD release because of it!

A few years ago they got the broadcast rights to the Halloween franchise and the first 3 years thats almost all the schedule was.

They still continue to run that franchise into the ground but they allow time for such "Horror Classics" as Gothika *vomits*

I mean i know it's hard to get alot of the broadcast rights but hell if they can get the Hellraiser series and show it (not to chopped up) why not others?

BTW The TCM underground on Fri nights is always uncut

I've talked with AMC before and they were taken over by different people and programming "specialists" who were designed to make more of a mainstream TNT type channel. The days of AMPOP and Monsterfest hosted by Tim Burton and Linda Blair are GONE. Luckily I have 100s of videotapes of the good old days so just like when I watch my Fritz tapes I relive the past quite often.

I,too remember the good days of commercial free AMC with knowledgeable hosts for films and a love of films. Now I would say they have become what they wanted to become. They are are TNT -like. All they have to do is start showing CSI and Law and Order and they will be there.

TCM and IFC are filling my void with TCM Underground and IFC Grindhouse but who knows how long those will last. Even Rob Zombie bailed on hosting. At Burbank Fango in the summer,Rob said TCM didn't seem to care much about the films and just wanted him to read a script without any passion for the flicks they were showing. He didn't care for it much from what I heard. If they would get off their highhorse this would be the perfect venue for Joe Bob Briggs(John Bloom). Why do I always have to come up with these ideas(is anyone from TCM reading this?)?

Even the Horror DVD companies like Code Red and Dark Sky are having problems. 1 or 2 companies may be out of business by the end of the year. Things aren't looking good for the drive in/grindhouse/retro fans nowadays. You can't even find most of these DVDs in stores. If it wasn't for Deepdiscount.com and Oldies.com I'd be in big trouble.

They are even selling the synapse titles cheaper then they do at cons lol

Wholeheartedly concur that Monsterfest now is awful. I think the year Roger COrman hosted was the last good one.

I know that Monsterfest has gotten really crappy over the years, but they did show Frankenstein vs. the Space Monster just this morning, lol! I’m having a sci-fi marathon flashback … a buddy of mine came over Saturday to watch my copy of Chopping Mall, I just picked up a copy of Fido on DVD yesterday, and now Frankenstein vs. this Space Monster this morning, cool!!

Monstervision with Joe Bob Briggs was great TV. What I would REALLY like to see are more local movie hosts (check out my sig for a few of The Great Ones). We have one in Houston named Count Pelicula (he's a mexican vampire; pelicula = movie in Spanish), but he's not as funny as Flippo, The Ghoul or Sir Graves Ghastly and not as insightful as The AMAZING Fritz the Night Owl. His movie selections are not as exciting either (lots of Abbot and Costello meet type flicks)

Fritz WAS Photoshopping before there WAS Photoshop. Fritz was the internet before it existed. Fritz encompasses all that TV should be. Who else in Central Ohio showed films like Equinox and Twisted Brain? He presented each film with his special brand of "liner notes' (must be the Jazz DJ in him). If you didn't grow up in the era of Double Chiller Theater on WBNS, I really, truly do feel sorry for you. Kudos to Infra Kid for saving his Fritz tapes and to Mecha74 for his avatar.

Yes I have very fond memories of Fritz as well, he began my lifelong obsession with Godzilla(the first film I saw was Destroy All Monsters) and all manner of classic(and not so classic ) sci-fi and horror when I was but a child, he is indeed the man! Sure I remember Elvira and Moana and Grandpa Munster but Fritz was always my favorite.

I've always hoped that Bruce would be able to get Fritz in as a marathon guest.

Another of my favorties growing up was Superhost up on Channel 43 out of Cleveland. That is where I got my introduction to Japanese Monster movies.

Yea Super Host was very cool that is where i got my first love for Godzilla and Hammer films...

It was always funny to see him hosting that Prize movie show on the day during the week. It was where you had to guess a 10 second movie clip but he was not doing it as Super Host..

And if i remember right was he not a member of 43's news team as well?

Yes he was, it always seemed to ruin the illusion for me to see SUPERHOST in a suit and tie doing the news.

it would have been '81 or '82 when I saw him on late night TV and I have been in Groveport my whole life. I think it was friday nights at 11:00 or Midnight when he was on.
