Feature Films for SF/37 Marathon

WAR OF THE SATELLITES (1958) 66 mins. - Roger Corman's legendary quickie was written, shot and released in theaters in just 8 weeks to capitalize on the Russian's launch of Sputnik. Dick Miller and Susan Cabot star.

ATTACK THE BLOCK (2011) 88 mins. - Writer-Director Joe Cornish's British indie about aliens invading an inner city hood. Features Jodie Whitaker and Moses Boyega and some retro 80s type effects and vibe. Edgar Wright executive produced (and Nick Frost has a supporting role).

SCANNERS (1981) 103 Mins. David Cronenberg's explosive tale makes it's Marathon debut. Jennifer O'Neil, Stephen Lack & Michael Ironside star. Don't be late returning to your seats for the beginning of this one. Wink http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081455/

BRAINSTORM (1983) 106 mins. - Douglas' Trumbull's visionary Sfx movie returns to the Marathon after over 25 years. Christopher Walken, Louise Fletcher, Cliff Robertson (who passed away this year) & Natalie Wood in her final film. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085271/

ISLAND OF LOST SOULS (1933) 70 min - Charles Laughton plays the fiendish Dr. Moreau in this powerful version of H.G. Well's story. Bela Lugosi has a brief but memorable supporting role as does Kathleen Burke as an ill-fated 'experiment'. You will find where Devo got their most famous tag-line here. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0024188/

FRANKENSTEIN (1931) 70 mins - James Whale's classic adaptation of Mary Shelley's novel features a star making role for Boris Karloff as well as Colin Clive, Mae Clarke, Edward Van Sloan and Dwight Frye as Fritz. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0021884/

RISE OF THE APES 105 mins - One of the year's most pleasant surprises was this sturdy new chapter in the long-running APES saga. Image a cross between the original quintet's CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES and the true story of PROJECT NIM. Features some nice homages to the Heston original, Andy Serkis' CGI acting and James Franco & Freida Pinto as the humans. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1318514/

MISSION GALACTICA: CYLON ATTACK (1979) 108 mins. - Ready for some more STAR WARS inspired TV space opera? Here's a feature length re-edit from the original 70s series with the familiar cast including Lorne Greene, Richard Hatch, Dirk Benedict & Maren Jensen. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077937/

PAUL (2011) 104 mins. Simon Pegg & Nick Frost's SF comedy road picture features Seth Rogan as the voice of Paul as well as lots of celebrity cameos and genre references. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1092026/

RE-ANIMATOR (1985) 86 mins. - Stuart Gordon's rude crude and uproarious take on H.P. Lovecraft makes it's return to the Marathon after two decades. Features Jeffrey Combs, the lovely Barbara Crampton and a score which rips off/pays homage to Bernard Herrmann. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089885/

COWBOY BEBOP: THE MOVIE 116 mins (2001) - Feature length version of the Japanese Anime cult favorite. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0275277/

DIMENSIONS (2011) - Sloan U'ren's British time bending feature makes it's North American debut. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1703231/

Short Subjects for Marathon:
DUCK DODGERS IN THE 24 1/2 CENTURY (1953). 7 mins. - Our traditional kick-off classic by Chuck Jones with Daffy Duck, Porky Pig and Marvin the Martian. ...

BAMBI MEETS GODZILLA (1969). 2 mins. Marv Newland's minimalist classic returns to the Marathon.

They've added Enthiran
Bollywood meets coming of age killer robot(s)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enthiran
And here's a preview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLO3iPWRvb0
Seems like a gas.
So much so that I had thoughts of attending. My daughter is in Grad school in Boston & when she heard that I had such thoughts, ordered me to visit.
So I'll be there.
edit: Reading further on this site I see that Enthiran was at Columbus last year. Worth viewing it for a second showing?

Tried to enthuse my standard crew of CWRU Marathoners - who visit here annually from as far away as Syracuse & Rochester - but no takers.
Have read, but never met Mr. Neff. He remained incognito if he was at the last CWRU Marathon.
The only other putative Ohio attendee who I am aware of will be my daughter, who barely qualifies since although she is a veteran of two CWRU Marathons and a born & bred Clevelander has resided in greater Boston for six of the last eight years.

I won't speak for Joe (in case he's going in disguise or something), but barring TSA abductions, natural/unnatural disasters, or undeath ... I'll be there.

VZeke,
Will you be wearing any Ohio gear? You know,
Ohio! You got to be tough! - Or
OHIO! It's not Iowa
Or my recent favorite, An Indians shirt with Fausto Carmona's number on the front and "A Player To Be Named Later"
on the back.
Maybe we could go out for pirogis or something.

I did indeed attend Boston. You can see the film list above. For a plethora of reviews, go to the Boston site: http://sf.theboard.net/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1329592572/0

My take on the two controversial films are that Dimensions was a perfectly lovely piece of British whimsy, well acted and stylishly presented. Notice the description: whimsy. As with most time travel films, there were logical inconsistencies that you could drive a truck through. There was also a minor subplot involving a predatory millionaire that could be totally summed up with, "Why?" But unless you are totally wedded to Hollywood productions, it was a charming change of pace, especially as it was shown in the middle of a batch of wham bam well known flics.
The closer, Folklore should, as the old joke goes, not be lightly discarded. It should be thrown with great force against the wall (and then hopefully used for as a superior fuel by a local pyromaniac.)
My strongest impression was the contrast with the Cleveland Marathon, which is more of a film showing with too many people wedded to their own shouted out "wit" where Boston is a fannish event with some participation. People were intensely friendly, but constantly preoccupied & busy. It was highly organized, with contests, goodie bags, and lots of shared history among the participants. The attendees were the same sort of folks as those who attend Cleveland, and probably Columbus. Some kids, but mostly science fiction movie nerds of discriminating taste, well developed opinions, and not enough to do with their lives.
Cheers from Cleveland.

Somehow, we ended up with 2 different threads in 2 different areas of the board (hey, I followed the board rules when setting up MY thread  ). Anyway, here is a link to my full recap of this year's event from that other thread: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1299&p=11537#p11537
