Post subject: | Los Angeles October Nights |
Over the last 4 years Los Angeles repertoire cinema has been growing. If you love cinema, Los Angeles is the city you want to live in, trust me. It's now to the point where every single day there is a cool screening some place. Every week, there are special guests, rare screenings of 35mm restorations, and screenings of local unsigned films. Last week I saw a John Carpenter double feature of Escape from NY and Escape from LA with Carpenter doing Q&A between the films. Last night I saw a Jim VanBebber double of Deadbeat at Dawn on 16mm shown with Manson Family, of course with VanBebber in attendance. For October, Los Angeles has 2 all nighters. Not the varied mix that Columbus has, but a fun group of films. They mostly seem stuck on late 70's and 80's films. I have not seen 5 of these films, so I am looking forward to them. This means I will go to 3 marathons in October! I am flying in for the Columbus thon too. Plus another theater here is showing horror films all month long. Then there is screamfest which is all premieres. October is going to be a busy month for me! That's nice that the Q&A session was between films. That way you didn't have to sit through that steaming turd of a sequel. I envy your wide variety of choices. However, I find it a bit overwhelming. The repertory thater in my neck of the woods is about 45 minutes from my house and I have a family. So while they play (mostly) cool stuff every weekend, it's just not worth it to make the trip up there. At this year's annual genre festival, they have announced Charles Cyphers and Lance Henriksen as special guests with screenings of The Fog and Aliens respectively. So that is definately worth the effort for me to attend since I can't make the cross-country journey to the Ohio marathon. |

Actually it is overwhelming. I obviously can't see 'em all. I really want to catch most of the Giallos. Will hit both marathons. Probably go to one or two films at Screamfest. John Carpenter was a great guest. I hated Escape From LA when I saw it the first time. I still think it is pretty weak, but I enjoyed it much more the second time around. I would love to see Lance Henrickson. No matter how bad the movie is, if Lance is in it, then there is something to like. |
