I think it's time to get in the mood for SPACEBOY!!!

SPACE BOY

Del Kacher's Studio
c. May, 1965

Florence Marly--vocals
Del Kacher--guitar, bass
FZ--drums, orchestration

Cosmonaut Sean, Space Boy, beware
Velana is waiting for you out there
Don't cross the parallel of time and space
Or you'll die of love in a crueller place
Velana is the queen and fate is her code
Velana the lover, sex without soul
Sean! Space Boy, Space Boy.

Laughing at danger, in unrosed jest
He soared through space on his gallant quest
But there in ambush behind heaven's gate
Mysterious Velana was lying in wait
Spellbound he looked into her glazing green eyes
She smiled and stirred her enticing thighs
Sean! Space Boy, Space Boy.

A thousand fires pierced his flesh
He pledged his love with tender caress
Fireballs and sunbursts showered them with lights
Then the two lovers held a sacred rite
Her kisses were deadly, the cosmic night grew dark
She tightened her green arms around his heart
A sob of sorrow echoed to the sky
He sighed "I love you," then he died
Oh, Sean! Sean! Space Boy, Space Boy.

Then he was buried among the stars
The legend says wherever you are
You can hear on certain nights
A young man's voice calling from the heights
Velana, Velana, come back to me, my love,
Velana, Velana, Velana, mon amour!
Oooh, Sean! Space Boy, Space Boy.

I was able to find several references to Space Boy on the net but not the song or actual short film itself.

This song appears on a bootleg Frank Zappa 10 LP Box Set called "Mystery Box" after a little searching I found a lot of information about this song.

"The film QUEEN OF BLOOD required a vocal track, so writer/director Curtis Harrington tapped Frank and Del Kacher for the orchestration and additional instrumentation on the song "Space Boy". Produced by George Edwards, QUEEN OF BLOOD was about an expedition to Venus and Mars in the year 1990, and it starred Basil Rathbone, Dennis Hopper, John Saxon and Judi Meredith. "Space Boy" was written by Florence Marly (playing the title character) and utilized her vocals, and Ackerman and Cole provided its sound effects. It was not used in the film, as Leonard Moran supplied the entire soundtrack."

And best of all I was able to find the song in MP3 format..I will probably post it tonight when I get home.

Actually, the MYSTERY BOX was a legit release from FZ. It was limited, to put it kindly, but it's out there and totally legal.

I didn't see any mention of this on the other board, I'm just curious. Bruce, did you take this with you to Boston and subject them to their first taste of SPACEBOY?

I posted this awhile back and Joe suggested a sing along so it's not an official Marathon thing (yet) but I did suggest to Bruce that he prints the lyrics in the program this year.

I'll have to check on the cost of ad space in this year's program. I'll post it here whenever a decision is made.

Meanwhile in Boston....
SPACEBOY made the trip for the first time, but along with a second reel of robot trailers (this year's theme), the reel including THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL trailer, the QUEEN OF BLOOD trailer, the Schaefer Beer robot bartender commercial and our beloved SPACE BOY didn't make it to the screen. I wanted them to get it on screen early. The first time you see the film stunned disbelief is an understandable reaction. I wanted to give the projectionist (who worked the entire 'thon superbly!) enough time to juggle it for a second screening. Now the more inquisitive Boston marathoids will be hearing the tune with no frame of reference. Like the Red Sox fans used to say "Maybe next year".

I think that Spaceboy has overtaken Gravity as my favorite short. "Stunned disbelief" is how Bruce put it, and it still makes my jaw drop every time. This isn't to take away from Gravity, but having seen it a couple of dozen times, I don't feel the need to rush into the theater every time it plays now. The Ghostbusters and Addam's Family music videos at the horror marathons are also high on my lists.

Wow, thanks Tim. Although now you've opened a whole new can o' space worms. After seeing SPACEBOY so many times, I could swear that the version of the song heard in the film is slightly different than the version you posted. Your copy has much more pronounced percussion in the background, and a steadier beat in general. I could be wrong, but I think the theatrical version subs in more keyboard doodling and Moog atmospherics for the drums.
