The Columbus Marathon Legacy-Films and Schedules
Posted by: Joe Neff on: 02/ 2/2000 12:13AM

OK, after several failed attempts and hours of frustration (damn technology!) here, finally, is the complete legacy of the Columbus marathon. This includes 24 hour Sci-Fi and Horror, as well as several schlock etc. Where possible or remembered, shorts are noted. If anyone spots any errors (there are some unknown premieres in a few ‘thons) please post corrections. So now, with a tip of the space helmet to Frank’s comprehensive Boston marathon list, and to Garen for keeping the tradition alive, and to give you an idea of what your former host organism Bruce Bartoo has spawned in Columbus, I present THE LIST!

In 1986, Jeff Frank, a local theater operator, took over the lease on the 800 seat Camelot North theater in Northern Columbus and turned it into a first run art house. Around the same time, Bruce Bartoo moved to Columbus and was subsequently hired as the single screen theater’s first general manager, a position he would hold for three and a half years. Bartoo pitched the marathon concept to Frank, and in spring of 1987, the theater held its first 24 hour Science Fiction Marathon.

After organizing two all night horror marathons with Drexel, I left to manage at Studio 35 Cinema, a 400 seat single screener in Northern Columbus. The Drexel decided not to stage another all night Horror Marathon with me, so I put on a 24 Hour Horror Marathon at Studio 35 in October of 1999.

If any of you would like more information about this marathon or the other Columbus ‘thons, look me up at this year’s Boston marathon. I’ll be the guy in the black NIGHTMARE AT STUDIO 35 T-shirt with the glow in the dark NOSFERATU. Once again, thank you for your time and LONG LIVE THE MARATHON!
