The Ohio Sci-Fi and Horror Marathons

I don't see as many horror movies as I used to. Still, when I see one get good reviews, I try and check them out. With notices saying its everything from better than expected to 'the scariest movie since THE EXORCIST', I kinda looked forward to it. Added to that is that INSIDIOUS was co-produced by Oren Peli who's PARANORMAL ACTIVITY was effective in a minimalist way. The PG-13 rating likely toned down noted torture porn director James Wan as much as Peli's involvement, but the combo works well enough.
And, for the first 2/3 of INSIDIOUS it's an okay if more than mildly silly haunted house cum possession horror film. Sure, every terror cliche is milked for all their worth, the shock cuts are turned up to 11 and the music and sound effects are turned up to 12, but, the film was serviceable enough. It even has a perfectly decent climactic scene, plus a twisty epilogue.
But, then.........................
Wan and SAW writer Leigh Wannell tack on a ludicrous sequence that makes the prior silliness look downright grounded by comparison. Full of foolishness that provides more laughs (and many MORE cliches) than shrieks. Not satisfied with torpedoing what was already a compromised ending, Wan and Wannell add yet ANOTHER epilogue that levels the film completely. And, who would think that you'd ever see a monster on screen that looks just like George Lucas' much reviled Darth Maul from PHANTOM MENACE?!

INISIDIOUS has simply become Insipid.

I learned that majority of Horror movies that was made after Scream 3 should be watched on DVD and or BLU RAY only. For me all the great horror flicks are made already.

That's crazy talk! There's plenty of great, fun inventive stuff, you just have to dig deeper. "I Saw the Devil" was one if the best horror films in the last 10 years. The last 10 years, which have given us:

I think any genre fan would be lying if they didn't acknowledge at least half of these films as being quality...

First of all, The Descent was a lot more than just "decent."

I caught I Saw the Devil this past weekend, and boy am I still trying to wrap my head around it. Intense, largely uncomfortable to watch and wholly original. I could almost feel my skull aching during each sudden burst of brutality. Just when you think it can't go any farther, it hits you with that slam bang ending. Required viewing for anyone looking to challenge themselves as to what a filmatic experience should be.

Not to get too hyperbolic, but the best way I can describe it is that this movie basically stared into my soul and lingered long after I had left the theater. How often can you honestly say that a film can do that to you?

Granted, it's not quite as good as Scream 3, but still...

The films you listed Meatfetish are good horror films. The ones I want to see never get released into theaters here in Columbus. If they do get into theaters here in Columbus it would be a limited run, late night during the weekend(s). Remember I did say the Majority of horror films not all horror films.

I watched Dead Snow on DVD. I even watched Human Centipede unrated BLU RAY (thanks UA Library system) I enjoy the I spit on Your Grave Remake. This was more violent and it make me physically sick watching it. Now if a horror movie makes me physically sick then it did its job.

I just added I SAW THE DEVIL to my Netflix List but its not available until 05/17/11. Maybe this one will shock me, so far the most uncomfortable I have ever been watching a movie was watching the rape scene in Irreversible. That was hard to watch.

I just watched Insidious last night and it did a good job in scaring me. I find this movie as a modern day Burnt Offerings. It did a better job in scarring me than the overrated and bland Paranormal Activity. This is how PG 13 horror flicks should be made.

I have to agree, I watched it recently and was also amazed at how well done it was PLUS it's not just another Ghost Story, it has a very interesting twist and even made me jump a couple times.
