Simply a fantastic line-up! Nice job. It's always funny to see people's reactions to the films. willcail calls it "Safe" and LA Connection connection expresses concerns about how graphic and intense several of the films are. Pretty divergent reactions! I definitely don't think this is a "safe" line-up. While I do agree with LA that Henry and Irreversible are pretty intense for some, I think these are bold additions to a diverse collection of films.

I actually LOVE the inclusion of Irreversible - not only is it a controversial film, but it is border-line horror so many of the horror fans in the audience will not have seen it. PLUS Stuart Gordon will introduce it! I can't wait to hear what he has to say about this film. I myself even had trouble watching this one. Unfortunately, I doubt I can make it......

If this is the beginning of a new era for the Horror Marathon I will start planning ahead and booking time off waaaay in advance.

My problem with IRREVERSIBLE and HENRY aren't that they are "intense" - you want a good horror film to evoke some form of intensity. I just don't think either qualify as horror films. Period. It's not just that they don't use familiar genre conventions like vampires, curses, the supernatural etc., but they are strictly dramatic pictures. There isn't any of the atmospherics or theatricality of other borderline films such as HALLOWEEN, SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and PSYCHO. I named HENRY my best film of the year when it came out, but, even at the time I objected to those who deemed it a horror film. Besides being shocking and horrific, there are no other elements of the genre in it. Of course, there are those who get off on watching serial killers and crimes against women - but, that's a different discussion.

If just being plain ole shocking and horrific qualifies as a "horror film", then why not go all the way and do a digital projection of some of the mega-extreme hardcore XXX porn films from Japan or Germany? Many in the audience would certainly be "horrified" by what they see.

Finally, I just don't see the 'entertainment' value in IRREVERSIBLE or HENRY (I've NEVER seen it again). Marathons to me have always been about enjoyment. I just have a hard time envisioning the grueling and painfully realistic assault in IRREVERSIBLE on the same bill as MASQUE, BLACK CAT etc.. This is NOT to say you can't have variety in a lineup, but any inkling I had of going was shot down with the inclusion of those 2 titles.

Personally I can't wait to see "IRREVERSIBLE" mainly because everytime someone says a movie is "shocking" I am not shocked. I keep waiting for that one film to come along that actually makes me cringe.

I've personally put off seeing Irreversible because of the rape scene, but I'm going to make it a point to sit through it this year. Henry is fantastic and I agree with some of what LA said, but I do think it shares some structural similarities with the slasher/serial killer subgenres. No one complained about Silence of the Lambs when it played and I'm sure Se7en will be welcomed if it ever played. I like when films skirt the edges of the genre and are done well. Both together might be a little much, but I'm game for it.

Se7en? That was a predicable movie that I wasted time on. When I say safe that these movies can be found at various Blockbuster rental stores. IMO Henry is a decient film but not all that great. I do agree that I don't consider Henry a horror film. If you want a disturbing film watch I.... Spit on Your Grave, Salo, and or The Girl Next Door.

Has anyone saw on the new website the list of films that are on reserve that we 'MIGHT' be getting one of as an additional possible premiere or last second replacement?

*Ogles Romero's 'Survival Of The Dead'*

Here's the list in case anyone missed it.

Quote:
In addition to this splatterific slate of films, one or two premieres may be added or substituted into the lineup. Possible premieres include:

* George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead, the latest chapter in his zombie canon
* Adrian Brody in Dario Argento’s Giallo
* The genetic virus comedy Pontypool
* More killer viruses in Carriers
* The Belgian shocker Left Bank
* Ti West’s harrowing 70’s throwback The House of the Devil

Whoah. 8)

In any case though, great lineup!

Here's the expanded home page with more info.

If you want a marathon full of obscure grindhouse movies, then I imagine there'd be lots of leg room and empty seats.. You may not of liked Se7en, but there are millions out there that do-just using that as another example of a borderline genre film. I thought that it's been covered ad nauseam that the marathons don't exist to cater to any one person's taste. I think Bruce and Joe have done an excellent job of providing balance this year. There's a couple dirty, mean movies like Henry and Irreversible. Classics like Day of the Dead and The Thing, some great old movies like Masque of the Red Death, a great foreign movie (The Host). That's not to mention the great guest! And I truly doubt there are many people attending that have seen everything on the list. Instead of nitpicking about personal preferences, I think we should all be celebrating the return of the 24 hour format and a great diverse lineup. There is literally something for everybody this year.

Seven was predictable because it was basically a remake of "The Abominable Dr. Phibes" I hate when movies like Seven are called original when in fact they are ripping off classic movies.

I'm not a brown nose like some people on this borad. I remember the past horror thons from the Studio 35 24 hours to the Grandview 14 hours and last year's Drexel East all have different kinds of horror films. Now this year's lineup I can find at the local Blockbusters stores or Franklin County Libraries. I do hope that some of the premires do replace some of the current lineup. Survival of the Dead is a better choice. BTW The Girl Next Door was released in 2007 and baised on the novel of the same name. The reason I'm going is to see Sturart Gordon and From Beyond. I did say that this lineup is better than the year of the bad print of The Shining. It could be better. If you like Se7en good for you if you like sub par movies that is nothing more of a rip off of a Vicient Price movie. Survival of the Dead is the second movie in the reboot Living Dead series. Diary of the Dead is was the first in the new series.

If the Marathon were only about "Films that you can't see anywhere else", then I'd agree with you, willcail. But for most of us, it isn't.

It's a celebration of the genre, and a chance to see those films in a theatre instead of on our computers or home entertainment systems.

I would not feel at all inspired to go to a marathon full of rare and obscure films. Some of those titles are nice, and they sometimes become the finds of the marathon, but I wouldn't want 24 hours of them.

I want the mix of old and new. Classics and modern classics, and scholck and dreck. Give me some supernatural horror, some more mundane terrors, and some science-fiction-based horror.

I want a Hammer Pictures classic, something that has subtitles, and a relatively recent picture.

I want a movie that will break the tension and make me laugh, and one that will leave me thinking deeply.

The mix is everything, and I think that Joe and Bruce have done a great job with this mixture here.

Unfortunately, my brother is getting married that weekend, so I won't be there - which really bums me out, because I am thrilled beyond words at the return to the 24 hour format.

Hey, this is good information. The next time I am in town to see my folks I will visit my local Franklin County Library and then Blockbuster so I can have the SAME EXACT EXPERIENCE as you folks will be sharing this October.
I'll make sure I bring along my monster repellant while I'm at the library. Or maybe I'll just have to solve a riddle or something.
