PLANET OF THE APES belongs on the AFI list long before BACK TO THE FUTURE. I like BACK, but its nowhere near the film.
I think AFI got caught up with there being so many films that the youngins wouldn't relate to that they searched for a couple of bones to toss to that demo and BACK got on the list. As much as I like CLOCKWORK ORANGE, 2001 was the one Kubrick film that had to be on the list - you didn't need two. And, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS should be there over E.T. (it's remarkable how E.T'.s reputation has slipped since it came out - remember, it was just about the biggest film of all time back in the day, now, how many times do people jump up and down with excitement at the thought of seeing it????).
EMPIRE STRIKES BACK over STAR WARS.
Where the hell is FORBIDDEN PLANET?????????!
and, we can "pencil in" Keanu's DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL over the originial one
right now, correct Patricia Neal?
