This is actually one of the reasons I love the marathons so much. There are movies that I absolutely cannot wait to see, and then there are the movies I use as nap time, lol.

We've had this discussion to some extent before. Part of the appeal of the marathons in the early years was, for the most part, this was the only place you could see some of these movies. We didn't have the proliferation of DVD box sets of classic and b-movies. Not to mention the Interwebs and the fact you can find torrents of almost anything. And most of us didn't have home theater systems.

I agree to some extent there is a spirit missing form the marathons. There are still the folks that hang out very early, but their numbers have diminished, though I think it has leveled out for the most part. But in general there seems to be fewer teens and more of us who are almost closer to retirement age than our teen years.

I thought I would try to breathe some life back into the costume contest by restoring the $100 Grand Prize. Yet, that hasn't seemed to do much, except line the pockets of Ro-Man. And more power to him, he puts in the effort and sweat in that costume. But I really keep hoping to see both the thought and creativity I recall from the early days. I'm doing the $100 again, but this may be the last year for it.

I find this really interesting. This is how I've always felt about the Sci-Fi Marathons, but not particularly how I felt about Horror (or Schlock.) It's probably just a matter of personal tastes, but I've left any number of Horror Marathons early when the tail of the line up didn't suit me. Wouldn't ever even consider bailing on a Sci-Fi, though. To each their own.

Hey, I think I pulled off a reasonably good R.J. MacReady for the last Horror Marathon. Too bad I was running cable during the costume contest. ;)

Bought my tickets this past weekend!

As for the films announced so far, I really don't see what all the complaining is about. Moon was probably my #1 choice to be shown this year, since I didn't see it during it's brief theater run. So I'm thrilled about that. 2010 is a must-show this year, and I have no complaints about that. Godzilla movies are always welcome in my book.

We all saw Star Trek just last summer, but I'm bringing a new friend with me this marathon, and the film he's most excited about so far is probably Star Trek, just for the chance to see it again on the big screen.

So if you're worried about the marathon not being the event it used to be, we probably need more films like Star Trek (or District 9 or Terminator 4) to attract new folks.

and w/the exception of Tokyo Gore Police, I thought the line up was pretty good.
For the record, I think Tokyo Gore Police was my favorite film from last year. But yeah, that's not the type of movie that's going to appeal to everybody.

So the key is variety (to make both old fans and new fans happy), and so far I think the first 7 films announced this year have that.

It's always kind of surprising to me when I hear marathoids say they only go to the SF or only the horror. There's so much overlap between the two genres. I've always been a much bigger horror fan than SF, but when I went to my first horror marathon in 1989 at the ripe old age of 13, I was hooked. I had to go to every marathon I could. It didn't matter that the 1990 SF only had a couple movies I knew or liked and almost all the films were from the 1950's and 1960's and cheesy. I fell in love with the entire atmosphere of the marathons. Sure the movies are important: I don't know if I'd go for 24 hours of Star Trek, Transformers and anime. But there's always at least a few great movies and surprises for everyone. As I've gotten older, I'm less committed to staying to the very end if I don't care about the last couple movies, but I always stick it out until at least 8am. I'm not in love with this year's lineup but Sleep Dealers looks interesting and I love a kaiju film with the marathon crowd. If skipping work didn't mean turning down 35 days as a freelancer, I'd drive there in a heartbeat and get blurry eyed with everyone else.

An eighth film has just been announced. So much for those SNL plans you had...

No one make a commet about Jason X making an apperance at the Columbus Science Fiction Marathon of 2010? This looks like one of the best marathon's to date. Galaxina, Godzilla vs Monthra, and now Jason X. This year is going to be great.

I've been checking in periodically for the past month with a few less posts than usual since I'm unable to attend this year, and I have to say that I think Infra-Kid has some points. I think he's waaaay off base about the lineups and which films would make a great marathon, it seems to me like the best way to kill the marathon would be to populate it with nothing but Green Slime and other obscure cheese-fests. We all like a little MST3000, but 24 hours of it would be a lonely marathon indeed. Same with the horror marathons, we can't just play Blood Feast and Italian cannibal films. But where I think Infra-Kid has a point is that this thing just is not publicized nearly enough. Here it is 2 weeks away and there isn't even a full line-up, let alone a flier. I remember getting the fliers more than a month in advance during the Drexel North heyday. Granted, there are a lot of reasons for decline in attendance (most importantly the rise in home theater technology). While I don't think it's the line-ups that have hurt attendance, the lack of a line-up and advertising really does nothing to get newbies into the theater. An entire weekend is something most people have to plan on giving up and don't usually wing it. Bruce and Joe did a great job getting the word out early on the horror marathon last year with fliers a month in advance and a great guest. But it seems obvious that forces beyond their control keep the sci-fi marathon from getting the same love. I know Joe and Bruce have regular day jobs and can't dedicate all their time to this, so there's no point in griping, because they truly do a great job every year. I just think it needs to be advertised better and sooner.

Who knows what attendance will be like, but this year's theme definitely seems to be "the marathon itself is enough." They got the word out early enough, but it is ridiculous not to have a full lineup in place when the thing is two weekends away. And the announced lineup so far is nothing more than a solid double. No homerun hitters in the lineup as of yet. And if you are counting on something like that to boost attendance, well it's a bit late for that.

I don't know what the buzz is like in town, but as an outsider, it is noticable that something is missing this year. Part of the problem is and always has been the lack of a consistent date. This year, they seem to be counting on a lot of regulars to keep things going because I can't see anyone who is on the fence being swayed one way or another right now.

And you are correct, what is essentially an entire weekend is difficult to commit to at the last minute. But, maybe relying on the attendance of "diehards" is enough for the Drexel right now. Who knows? I sure don't.

Not to sound mealy-mouthed, but I think everybody has made good points about the events. I include the Boston edition in that as well. Both events seem to be suffering from the same greying of the audience. Old timers who ALREADY know about the event go, but attracting NEW blood is difficult.

In Boston, we've tried adding a Festival to the Marathon with mixed results. Attendence has ticked up a bit after years of decline, but the overlap between 'Festival' and Marathon is spotty.

Still, with lots of hard work AND, perhaps most importantly, the co-operation of the local media these events can prosper. Someone here posted about a Chicago event with much larger attendence than Boston or Columbus.

Just last night in Hollywood, the opening night of a FILM NOIR Festival there was a sellout - 700 people - Plus! DOZENS of folks were turned away! L.A. is a much bigger market than Columbus (or even Boston), but it is also notoriously finicky when it comes to vintage film screenings. The American Cinematheque and the Film Noir Society did a fantastic job of publicizing the event AND the local media got the word out.

And, WE all have to help out as well. Get out there and tell everyone who might remotely be interested in attending all about the event.

Don't give up, folks. We can all help turn around our Sister Marathons!

I'm glad that there isn't a full lineup as of yet. There's always a chance for last minute replacements. I like to be surprise as well. There is no reason to have a 24 hour cheese fest. There was one a two years ago. Since my first sci fi thon the theater was pack.

Probably too late to suggest trying to get a film, but I think having the original Clash of the Titans with Harry Hamlin would be very cool and very fitting, seeing as how the update is in theaters now....and from the reviews i have been hearing for the update, the original may indeed be the better film!.....
