That's great that you love your phone, but we are talking about advertising here. No one is going to happen upon this website or anything else about the event by accident. I guarantee you attendance would be higher if there were a physical paper flyer out there somewhere.

Saying basically "we don't need a flyer because I am using my phone right now" just doesn't make any sense at all.

Obviously there was no internet in 1989, but the original point, which others have made too, is that it was a total accident that I ever heard of the marathon in the first place. There had been 3 sci-fi and 1 horror marathon before that, that I wish I had known about and attended. It's the accidental marathoid we need more of.

OK I'm conversing with Luddites here. You're still missing the point. 89% of American uses cell phones. Majority of said cell phones have web access.
If people want to find more info about the Marathon they can use their cell phones to look up if they are any movie marathons in Columbus Ohio. Or any mobile device that can access the net over WIFI, WIMAX,
EVDO, EDGE, GPRS, 3G, Sprint's 4G, ect. Thus the paper flyer is render useless.

When I first heard about the Marathons it was online. Not from a piece of paper. You have to realize that Majority of young people get their info from the web and not from pieces of paper.

Most 30 year old's and under find out about the marathon on line. this is why there is a website and message board. Please the era of the Drexel North is over. The 1980's are over. Live in the now and not some past and not worried about some piece of paper in the 21 century. :x

willcail, i find it incredibly rude and insulting that you cannot just agree to disagree with everyone else's points, and resort to calling them Luddites...to go along with your reasoning, not everyone wit ha cell phone pays for an internet data package, and most cell phones wouldn't be able to display alot of info about the marathon at a time anyway. Only those with large screen phones, i.e. iphones, etc., would be able to take full advantage of that. And one more thing..if you are going to be a regular poster on the forum, please learn proper grammar and spelling...I wager that most people find your posts to be rather irritating to try and decipher.....just agree to disagree with everyone else here, and let's all just move on to looking forward to another great marathon...

Did willcail just volunteer to spend the money on web, spam, and telemarketing ads so that the marathon doesn't need flyers? That could work.

Okay, I'm officially stepping into my Site Admin. shoes now. If you guys want to continue this strain of the thread's argument, take it to PM's. And Will, per my posting earlier in the thread: I've been behind the scenes of the Marathons for a long time now. I can tell you, for a fact, that fliers are still an integral part of the promotion. That's not a knock on the website, just a fact of what has and continues to work in one area of the event's promotion.

OK guys, normally I don't do this, but I think it's time to lock this.

With regards to the flyers this year - Yes, normally there would be one. Due to a difficult time getting bookings and time constraints, however, I don't know if there will be one. I usually don't make it, so I can't say for sure, but given how close the 'thon is and the difficulties getting the bookings, I wouldn't hold my breath. If there is, and I know about it, I will post a pdf up on the site and I'm sure there will be some distributed about town.

As for other traditional marketing - I suspect there will be something showing up in the Dispatch, and it may appear elsewhere as well.

As for "viral" marketing - Yes, there are attempts to do that as well. We have ads/writeups up on columbusunderground.com, examiner.com, comicheronews.com, and drexel.net that I am immediately aware of. We are happy to do more and if someone wants a quick ad/banner for their site to promote it, or wants to suggest a place to discuss it with, drop me a PM. We are also looking into other ways to promote the event.

Unfortunately, it's simply been a tough year for getting bookings and Bruce and Jeff are doing the best they can.
