Interior of 2001 program335 viewsAh, DON'T LOOK NOW. So here's the story: when we originally booked this Nicolas Roeg classic, my intent was to play it in a mid-afternoon slot. However, we subsequently booked CREATURE in 3-D and NOSFERATU with live music, so that slot was taken. Then, we scored the two premieres, so they went in the prime time slots after Joe Bob introduced CARRIE. As a result, DON'T LOOK NOW was pushed back to the early morning hours...which became the middle of the night after the natural delays of any good Marathon. Needless to say, the time slot killed the crowd. It's too bad, as I've spoken with several people that saw it wide awake later and quite enjoyed it. Maybe it will reappear at a more reasonable hour one of these days. (Neff)

Interior of 2001 program330 views*At the time, Kathy Saunders was a veteran member of the ROCKY HORROR cast, which had settled into a regular run at Studio 35. Her husband, Mike, appeared as the dead body at the top of the stairs in NIGHT OF THE LIVING BREAD.
*THE TEENAGE UFO PSYCHO MONSTER SEX SHOW was a 90-minute trailer compilation from Hollywood sleaze maven Johnny Legend, which had been touring the West Coast fora few months. Johnny pitched it to me as "the history of Western civilization", everything from a Warner Brothers cartoon to rare exploitation trailers. I didn't realize that some of those trailers featured (ahem) nudity, so there were a few shocked reactions during this dinner hour screening. One woman scolded me with "I didn't come to a Horror Marathon to see sex and nudity!" Let the irony roll. In any case, one of the highlights of the screening for me was standing in the back of the theater with Weird Love Maker Mark Gunderson when the trailer for THE WEIRD LOVE MAKERS unexpectedly hit the screen. You can't script moments like that, folks. (Neff)

Original paste-up of ad for 2001 Marathon246 viewsSo here's a head-scratcher. When I was pulling materials from my archive for this online archive, I came upon this ad paste-up. I remember making it, but I have no idea what publication it was for. I'm assuming that it was for our sponsor, the Columbus Alive, but I have no clearer memory. Anyone? (Neff)

Flier for 2001 Marathon239 views*Joe Bob Briggs was, of course, our first guest of honor. More on him in subsequent gallery posts.
*Hmmm....we never did play PSYCHO at a Studio Marathon. Actually, the original plan that year was to play Hitchcock's classic, but the Wexner Center had already booked it for their Halloween Horror double feature (with THE BLACK CAT) so we deferred to them.
*I had worked for several years to arrange for charismatic, psychotronic, electro-mashup lounge lizards The Weird Love Makers to appear with NOSFERATU. I met the group through my good friend (and longtime Marathon ally) Steve Carter, who at the time was living with Weird Love Maker Greg Fernandez. After meeting him, I attended a screening of NOSFERATU (with a crowd of around twenty) in the back of Monkey's Retreat on Halloween 1998, at which the WLM provided their own live score. From that moment on, I knew that their act would play well in front of a larger crowd.
I had arranged with head WLM (and Evolution Control Committee mastermind) Mark Gunderson for the group to perform with NOSFERATU at the 2000 Marathon, but that fell through. One year later, though, everything came together. The result was one of my favorite Marathon memories.
*I stole the free breakfast idea from the Boston Science Fiction Marathon, which once offered a free champagne breakfast to all survivors. Our free breakfast consisted of bagels and juice, but hey... (Neff)

Interior of 2001 program223 viewsJoe Bob originally wanted to introduce both CARRIE and ROSEMARY'S BABY. ROSEMARY'S was the opener, and I'd been planning to screen CARRIE as the closer, so some adjustment were made. This led to Joe Bob chiding me in front of the audience for closing the fest with BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, although I let the audience in on why BUFFY had to be re-slotted. (Neff)

Interior of 2001 program221 views*Boy, what a (ahem) diverse cast for THE CONVENT. It had been playing the circuit for a few months and had been getting fairly good notices. The end result was a bit spotty, to say the least, but it was good fun nonetheless.
*SESSION 9 was well-received by the audience, and it remains one of my favorite Marathon premieres. Brad Anderson would strike again with the 2002 Sci-Fi Marathon screening of his HAPPY ACCIDENTS. (Neff)
