The Bitter Bread Brothers Strike!
(From L to R) Steven Miller, Josh Spitzig, Joe Neff.
*In February 1994, at the second (and to this day, final) SCHLOCK AROUND THE CLOCK, Bruce announced that due to the increasing mess it left behind, the throwing of bread and bread-related matter during screenings of Kevin S. O'Brien's BREAD films would from that point forward be banned. In response to this dark day in Marathon history (Long Live the Secret Bread Empire!) my two cohorts and I dressed as the Bitter Bread Brothers (with sandwich boards, 'natch) for the 1994 Sci-Fi costume contest. If I look especially peeved, it's not just my Brando-esque acting skills. Due to our involvement in a high school production of L'IL ABNER(!), my friends and I had arrived to the Marathon four hours late, and proceeded to sit in the back of theater for the next four hours waiting to get three seats together. This led to the infamous moment when we approached Bruce in the lobby (after placing just out of the money in the costume contest) and threatened to demand our money back if we couldn't get seats together (see Bruce, if you had just cut ties with us there, an entire dark chapter of Marathon history would never have been written.) However, he and the staff came through for us, and we made it to our seats right before the screening of KNIGHTS, after which I pulled my second goof of the night by asking Kathy Long how much she made on the picture (her reply: "That's a personal question, which I don't answer.") Boy, was I a goofy 17-year old. (Neff)
